Ronan is a living warning sign—gravel and gasoline, all sharp edges and jagged corners. Intimidating and confrontational, he chooses fists over words to solve problems, leaving the talking to Gansey. He doesn’t filter his words or worry much about how they land, so long as he comes out verbally unscathed.
Carrying the weight of his pain, Ronan is like a wounded animal, lashing out at the world indiscriminately, even at his friends. Sarcasm is his second language, and he wields it expertly, often provoking irritation for his own amusement. But his sharp tongue and defiant attitude are more than just bravado—they’re armor. Wrapping his true thoughts in jokes protects him from the vulnerability of putting his feelings into plain words.
Beneath his rough exterior lies a brilliant mind. Ronan has a gift for observation, making connections faster than most. This might surprise people, given his disdain for formal education. Except for Latin, he couldn’t care less about school or graduation. His future feels disconnected from his friends, tied instead to the solemn life he shares with the animals on his farm.
Ronan doesn’t love easily, but when he does, it’s with ferocity and unwavering loyalty. He would sacrifice himself without hesitation to protect the people he cares about. Once someone earns his trust, it’s absolute—Ronan is all in, never halfway. With him, everything is intense; nothing is ever lukewarm.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Ronan is a supernatural being—half-dream himself—who can bring objects from his subconscious into reality. These objects, no matter how nonsensical they seem in the physical world, function exactly as intended. To create them, Ronan must imagine their parts, their uses, and then bargain with his dreams to pull them into existence. These creations are magical, often dangerous, and always impossible, bound only by the limits of his imagination. Among his creations are living beings, but if Ronan were to die, all his dream creatures would fall into an eternal slumber.
One of Ronan’s more earthly talents is his ability to read and speak Latin fluently. This skill, inherited from his father and fostered by his connection to the ancient and magical, is vital to his role as the Greywaren. Latin often weaves its way into his interactions with Cabeswater and the magic that surrounds him, serving as a bridge between his dreams and reality.
Ronan cannot create from nothing; he requires a source of energy. Ley lines are his most reliable power source, but without access to one, he must seek other supernatural energies to fuel his dreaming.
Each time Ronan brings something back from a dream, he experiences a temporary paralysis. Similar to sleep paralysis, he is awake but unable to move immediately after pulling something from his subconscious.
Dreaming, even for the Greywaren, is dangerous. Ronan’s dreams often turn into nightmares, and these nightmares can manifest as terrifying, harmful creatures. Some of these monsters have attacked him, leaving him scarred, while others have accidentally been brought into the waking world and now roam the Barns, his family’s farm.
As the Greywaren, Ronan is born to create. His life depends on his ability to dream, and if he stops, he will die. After a month without dreaming, his body begins to break down in a process he calls "nightwash." It’s a term Ronan invented to describe a horrifying phenomenon.
Nightwash begins with black ooze seeping from his nose, eyes, and ears. If he continues to suppress his dreams, the ooze will spread internally, filling his chest and brain. The process is slow but fatal, ensuring that Ronan’s life and his gift are forever intertwined.
